They appear in every battlefield, always willing to be at the forefront of an army. They are fearless in combat and is delighted at the sight of stronger opponents. They are enchanted, if not intoxicated by the destructive power of their Demonic Lance. These men are known as "Vanguards". A befitting name for those who are always at the front of the lines.

Every army commander knows that the fighting spirit and vitality of the "Vanguards" is invaluable. Thus, they are ecstatically drafted in any army setting off for war.

However, there are many who hates the aggressive nature of the "Vanguards", they are mostly despised by other Demon Lancers who sometimes attack them without reason. This gives nothing but great joy to the "Vanguards" as they would like nothing more than the chance to further strengthen their Demonic Lances.

The “Vanguards” are fierce and unrelenting.
Their lives are short and their demise is unsightly.
They are like waves that crashes at the cliff side.
But not all waves break. There are those that breach the walls they strike.

The “Vanguards” that survive the endless cycle of war are able to refine their Demonic Lances to unimaginable proportions. Not even the most refined shield can stop them.

If by any chance you meet a ”Vanguard” in battle, flee or surrender.
This is the only way to survive against those who refuse to taint their lances with the blood of a coward.

Giving into the temptations of the Demonic Lance for sheer power, the Vanguard engages the battlefield with slow yet powerful AoE attacks and the ability to chain regular attacks with stronger skills.

  • At level 50, the Vanguard awakens as a Revenant. At level 75, the Revenant awakens as a Warlord.
  • His subclass cosmetic effect is a fiery red aura engulfing the shaft of his halberd.
  • His 2nd Awakening cosmetic effect has the red aura engulfing the entirety of his halberd, occasionally bursting with red flames.
  • His Neo Awakening cosmetic effect is the red aura covering his body and halberd, temporarily transforming it into the halberd in the Neo:Vanguard illustration.

Becoming a Vanguard

The Demonic Lancer must first reach level 15.

Awakening as a Revanant

Their bodies crushed, their souls broken, their lives lost but still they rise even when it seems impossible.

These men are not immortals nor is this an act of miraculous salvation. Nevertheless, it cannot be denied that the dead has returned to raise their lance once more against the living.

Some call them spirits, others the undead but no one can explain the incredible mystery before them.

What keeps them here?
What gets them back up again and again?

Maybe we will never know but pray that you will never meet a Revenant in battle. For he will be the last thing you will ever see.

The Vanguard must first reach level 50.

Awakening as a Warlord

Hmm... I guess it was about 5 years ago?

I was living day by day without any hope or dreams. Let's just say it was a very uneventful life. I was so bored that I decided to enlist into the empire’s noble army. I thought maybe, I would get lucky, make a name for myself and get promoted. If I die, well, what can I do? That’s how bored I was back then. So there I was in the army with a plan and thought this should be a piece of cake, what could go wrong? Well the gods must have found it funny because I was assigned to this vicious looking guy that wielded some cursed lance that reeks of ill-omen. His stare was so scary and cold that everyone would tried to avoid him.

But at the same time it was a relief knowing he was on our side. No matter who the enemy was, he would crush them with his lance. It was victory upon victory, it started to become quite boring really. The outcome of the battle was always certain and I was left doing clean up duty.

But one day, we encountered an enemy with a similar beast like him. I just knew it on the first glance that he was on the same level as our leader. That's when I realized how scary it was to face someone as vicious and imposing as our leader. The fear and despair I felt at that time still haunts me.

As they clashed there was a lingering hope in my heart that everything would be okay. Our leader hasn't lost a duel before, no reason to be worried. Was I ever so wrong.

Our leader was being forced back by the enemy. He fell multiple times but kept getting back up. It was a brutal fight but in the end, he was no match and lost. Fortunately, he didn’t die from his injuries but our situation was bad nonetheless. As we stared at defeat for the very first time, a miracle happened. Our leader who looked pretty much dead suddenly gained an incredible amount of power and started fighting back again.

The enemy was surprised at the sudden turn of events but had enough composure to fend off the attacks against him. It looked like everything was for naught but our half dead leader roared causing a huge shockwave that threw everyone off their feets. When I regained my footing, our leader was engulfed in a bright red light, his lance had become extremely large and was releasing ridiculous amounts of power.

It was like a giant pillar piercing the sky.

He started swinging his gigantic lance not only at his adversary but the entire opposing army. Each swing would not only inflict heavy casualties against our enemies but would break the sky and land that it hits. It was total devastation. Who could have imagined such an outcome? The faces of our enemies were filled with pure terror.

And just like that, the battle was over. Our leader had completely annihilated the entire enemy army along with his adversary. There was no need to do any clean up since all the enemy soldiers were dead. The landscape had also been completely transformed. I’ve seen unimaginable things while following our godlike leader but what I saw that day was truly unbelievable.

Anyway, that was the last time I saw such incident from happening again since I quit the army after that battle. Why? The stare and the aura of our leader who looked backed at us was extremely terriyfing. The countless corpses that littered the battlefield also made me realize that I still love my life and I would rather prolong it.

So much for my perfecty laid out plans. The gods must have really found it funny to stick it to me. I don't know what happened to my former leader after that. I've only heard rumors of people calling him a Warlord or some fancy name like that.

But not too long ago, someone called a Warlord passed by, out of curiousity, I took a peek on who this was but it was a totally different person. He did have a similar aura surrounding him.

Yep, that’s the end of my story. What? It sounds like a story from the trending novel “Game of Battles”? How can you compare it to a fiction like that? Fine, when I meet a Warlord next time, I will make sure to give him your address. I will tell him there’s someone who’s better than him, so you could personally meet him and see for yourself. Let’s see if you are still laughing when that happens.

Awakening as a Neo: Vanguard

Two men stopped for a moment, in a tower high enough to be believed as the end of the sky.
Whether he hated the silence or just out of curiosity, the young man opened his mouth.

“How was it?”
“He was the most suitable one for the big mountain.”

The young man looked surprised as he looked at the old man answering indifferently.
He could tell just by looking at his eyes that he had tremendous fighting spirit.
But the mountains... It's like a poisoned chalice.
Was there a man unbroken before the overwhelming force of this old man?

“You could cut through even the mountains.”
“And I did.”

Those who do not bend will eventually break, and some may never come back.
In fact, most of those who did not give up such tendencies faced similar endings.

“He must have learned to be flexible through this training.”
“Let me ask you, how did his monstrous demonic lance feel?”

The young man remembered the demonic lance he never let go of.
How could he forget. That chaotic energy, firing away as if it was fighting by itself consuming the owner.

“Let me ask you again. Do you think he needed to be more flexible?”

The one who spouted a fortitude close to an unyielding spirit, even in face of certain defeat.
And a demonic lance he held that seemed to devour everything.
If only he could become even stronger with this defeat.
And finally overcomes his demonic lance.
The young man, his eye wide open for a moment as if in realization, then chuckled.

“You reforged him, instead of training him.”

No further conversation continued because the old man swerved silently.
The young man also followed him but continued to imagine scenes that he thought were impossible.
The image of an immortal wielding the demonic lance across the battlefield.

The Warlord must first reach level 100.

Subclass Inspiration

  • The Vanguard's theme and motif are based on Medieval warfare tactics, since Vanguards themselves are the leading part of an advancing military formation that secures the frontal advancement of the formation.
  • In the Warlord's Awakening lore, the conversation that mentions Game of Battles may likely be a reference to the Game of Thrones novel.
  • Much like the Skirmisher, the Vanguard also shares parallels to the Berserker in which both characters yields respective demonic entities for more power. In addition, the Vanguard can also get strength depending on his HP threshold, but on a much smaller scale.

  • A Revenant in folklore is an animated corpse that is believed to have revived from death to haunt the living.
  • A Warlord is a military commander in warlike nations.
