Shume, the Keeper of the Land |
Lord Adventurer, has it ever occurred to thou that there might not art a tomorrow?
Once upon a time, in Seon, it did. The Cloudless Night. When all the mist was gone, and thou thought there might art nay more tomorrow.
But the people of that time trusted Myre, and they believed that the God of Mist would not forsake them.
In the end, Myre met the God of Mist in who only existed in faith, and the Mist returned to Seon.
Despite what happened, the records of the time say that nay one in Seon gave up their daily routine.
Plant growers continued to wash their leaves that afternoon, those who believed in the God of Mist continued to pray, those who traveled continued to travel...
Yes, we, the Keeper of the Lands, are here for them, to keep their faith alive.
There may art nay tomorrow, but to record and to promise...
Perhaps the records that make us believe there was a yesterday create faith, and that faith creates a tomorrow for all.
To believe there wilt art a tomorrow, and to live today more fully. To believe in each other.
Do thou understand? As the Keeper of the Land, it is mine duty to keep a record of all that happens.
So, Lord Adventurer, tell me what thou ate for lunch and where thou have been.
You cannot get away this time! |

Shume, the Keeper of the Land |
Lord Woomu is a Sacred Constellation Turtle.
Keepers of the Lands are accompanied by a Sacred Constellation Turtle even before they become Keeper of the Land. The one that accompanies the Keeper of Sky of Thousand Seas is as big as Asrahan, so thou can imagine how big that is.
Anyway, when thou are chosen as Keeper of the Land, thy first task is to choose a Constellation Turtle egg to art with.
There are several ones to choose from, and thou wilt stay with yours until they hatch.
Lord Woomu's egg was the weakest of all.
It had not hatched in a long time, and the Keeper of Sky of a Thousand Seas was worried that it might never hatch.
Nay one would admit it, but Lord Woomu's egg was always left unchosen.
Perhaps everyone saw the Constellation Turtle of Sky of a Thousand Seas and wanted a big one for themselves.
Even though the Keeper of Sky of a Thousand Seas didn't fell that way at all. |
|
Adventurer |
(Then, why did you choose Woomu?) |
|
Shume, the Keeper of the Land |
I... This may sound pathetic, but for some reason, I sympathized with the egg.
It takes a lot of work and discipline to be a Keeper of the Land, and in Seon, the weight of the promise is not light.
And I became one simply because the Keeper of Sky of a Thousand Seas thought I should. I fell far short in the eyes of others.
I understand, of course. I have realized my own inadequacies here.
Hah hah. Looking back, I realize that the other Keepers of the Lands and I were very young. |

Adventurer |
(...) |
|
Shume, the Keeper of the Land |
...I can see that thou think I'm still young. |
|
|
Shume, the Keeper of the Land |
The way I speak?
I have spent so much time with the Keeper of Sky of a Thousand Seas that I have naturally picked up many of his mannerisms. I have been with him since I was very young...
Of course, I am well aware of the awkwardness of mine speech to others and to thou.
Since I came to Clearmist, I have tried to correct it, but it seems to have merged with the way of speaking here.
Ah, Cladis?
Calling him without the honorific is, um... There's a story.
Are thou wasking me to call thou without it as well?
But Lord Adventurer, thou art an important guest, from the world beyond the mists... |
|
Adventurer |
(...) |
|
Shume, the Keeper of the Land |
Ah, okay.
Ad...
Adventurer.
Ugh, it does not sound right. I cannot do it.
I apologize, but thou must remain Lord Adventurer. |
|
|
Affectionate |
|
Narration |
"Do not be timid." "Keep a smile on thy face." "Do not think thou are not good enough." |
|
Adventurer |
(These promises...) |
|
Shume, the Keeper of the Land |
D-did you see them?
It's embarrassing, but they are... Promises I made to myself.
When I first came here, everyone was kind and good to me, but nay one asked me to record their promises.
To them, I was a child to art taken care of, not the Keeper of White Ocean, and rightly so.
It is not an obligation to make promises through the Keeper of the Lands, and methinks perhaps the people of Clearmist didn't trust me enough as Keeper.
At that time, I also thought a lot about mine own shortcomings.
I could not rely on anyone, and I doubted myself.
That was when Cladis came to mine aid.
He said he had done the same. He said he had done the same.
And as thou can see, the promises he suggested were very small.
Like "smile brightly" and "say hello clearly."
But they were powerful.
Making promises to myself and trying not to break them changed me.
And that's the power of promises and records and faith that I try to keep.
Lord Adventurer, have thou made such promises to thyself? |
|
|
Shume, the Keeper of the Land |
... |
|
Adventurer |
(She doesn't look happy today.) |
|
Shume, the Keeper of the Land |
...Lord Adventurer. |
|
Adventurer |
What's wrong? |
|
Shume, the Keeper of the Land |
...
I apologize. Right now, I... |
|
Adventurer |
Talk to me. I'm listening. |
|
Shume, the Keeper of the Land |
...
...Sometimes I am terrified.
Do thou remember when I told thou about the other Keeper of the Lands?
I spoke of them as if they were young, but I knew better.
That being a Keeper of the Land is for the truly exceptional, and that they all work to the bone in addition to their natural talents.
They all have a sense of mission of Keeper of the Land, to serve Seon.
I was not one of them.
I was just put there without knowing why.
I had nought, and I did not want to have anything...
To tell thou the truth, I knew that everyone was trying to help me. I was the one who made the mistake of pushing them away,
creating the illusion that they saw me as young and inadequate.
With the help of Cladis and the rest of White Ocean, methinks I've gotten over it, but sometimes, on misty days, I'm reminded of what happened at the Verge of Recollection.
I wonder if Cladis thought the same thing, which is why he didn't trust me and tried to carry it all on his own...
I feel as if his eyes are on mine back, telling me that I am not fulfilling mine duties as Keeper of White Ocean. |
|
Narration |
Shume opened the page with her promises to Cladis that the Adventurer had seen earlier. |
|
Shume, the Keeper of the Land |
I'm sorry. I wanted to show thou only mine good side, and today, I broke it.
But thou said thou would listen, and I am glad for this opportunity to talk to thou.
Hah hah. I guess I have come to rely on thou a lot without realizing it.
Next time, I will return to the bright Shume, the Keeper of White Ocean. Do not worry too much about me. |
|
|
Shume, the Keeper of the Land |
Lord Adventurer.
...A promise?
Do thou want to make a promise all of a sudden?
Oh, okay, but I do not see anyone here to make a promise to though. |
|
Adventurer |
(...) |
|
Shume, the Keeper of the Land |
Err... With me?
Lord Adventurer, if thou are concerned with our previous conversation...
You look adamant. Okay, what is it? |
|
Narration |
Shume's hand paused as she tried to write down the Adventurer's words.
"Believe in someone's faith."
Shume seemed lost in thought, and then she finished writing the promise. |
|
Shume, the Keeper of the Land |
...
So, thou thought about it.
I'm ashamed of myself. There are people here who care about me, who believe in me, and I...
Yes. I am the Keeper of the Land, the keeper of all the promises of White Ocean. It is what I can and must do.
Even if I do not believe in myself, thou and the Celebrant of the Eye of Mu do.
Now that I have promised to believe in that belief, I shall not doubt it.
I will cherish this promise. |
|
Narration |
After spending some time together, they parted ways. |
|
Shume, the Keeper of the Land |
A-are they gone?
Lord Woomu, come here. I have a promise to revise. |
|
Narration |
Shume corrected the promise, which read, "Believe in someone's faith" to
"Believe in the Adventurer's faith." |
|
Shume, the Keeper of the Land |
Hah hah.
Ah, yes, the first promise we made. |
|
