You redirect the file like a page.
For instance I redirected both File:Explosive Hook (Female).png and File:Explosive_Hook_(Male).png to File:Explosive_Hook.png so everything is nice and there's not 3 copies of the file floating about.
For instance, if we ended up needing File:Explosive_Hook_(Attack_Helicopter).png, you would just hit the create page button instead of uploading the file and add #REDIRECT [[File:Explosive Hook.png]]
