You redirect the file like a page.

For instance I redirected both [[:File:Explosive Hook (Female).png]] and [[:File:Explosive_Hook_(Male).png]] to [[:File:Explosive_Hook.png]] so everything is nice and there's not 3 copies of the file floating about.

For instance, if we ended up needing [[:File:Explosive_Hook_(Attack_Helicopter).png]], you would just hit the create page button instead of uploading the file and add #REDIRECT <nowiki>[[File:Explosive Hook.png]]</nowiki>
